Historic Municipal Building
The Alangalang Municipal Hall in Leyte is more than just a government building. It stands at the heart of the municipality, serving as the official structure that governs and administers Alangalang. Beyond its administrative functions, the Municipal Hall holds historical significance, as General Douglas MacArthur stayed there during World War II. This adds a layer of historical importance to the building, making it a notable landmark in the municipality.
Peatland
Alangalang’s peatland is a unique part of the heritage tied to the culture, history, and environment of the place. It is the second-largest peatland in the Philippines, following Agusan Marsh, covering 1,383.13 hectares across four barangays in Alangalang and one barangay in Sta. Fe.
The picturesque view of the peatland, its lush green environment, and the presence of unique flora and fauna make it ideal for nature camping, trekking, horseback riding, animal viewing, photography, and relaxation. This area offers a tranquil escape into nature, providing numerous activities to appreciate its natural beauty and biodiversity.
Most Holy Trinity Parish
Holy Trinity Parish of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Palo was established in 1852 and is located in the Municipality of Alangalang, Province of Leyte. The Parish Fiesta is celebrated every 19th of June.
The Jesuits, led by Fr. Come de Flores, established the Christian mission in Alangalang in 1596 as the fourth doctrina after Carigara, Dulag, and Ormoc. A church made of light materials (bamboo and wood) was erected and completed on June 15, 1597.
In the following century, the site of the first settlement was in Bukid. It suffered immensely from Moro attacks and natural disasters, leading to the church being annexed as a visita of Barugo. In 1852, Alangalang seceded from Barugo and was raised to parish status; another account suggests its parochial status was granted much earlier, in 1809.
Lingganay Festival
Once, Alangalang had a legendary golden bell treasured by the natives and saved from Moro raids by Francisco Antoni. In their haste to hide the bell, it was dropped into the depths of Lake Bakga, only to be lost forever. However, this tragic loss brought legendary fame to the town.
Inspired by the golden bell, or Lingganay, a street dance was performed, initially participated in by clustered barangays in the poblacion. This event was launched on June 18, 1998, in time for the fiesta celebration, and has been held every June 19th since then. Thus, the Lingganay Festival was born.
Lingganay Festival Park
The Lingganay Festival Park in Alangalang serves as a leisure destination where families gather to enjoy various physical activities and provide a safe playground for children. Situated in front of the Most Holy Trinity Parish and Alangalang Civic Center, it has become a venue for countless memorable events. This park not only fosters community engagement but also offers a serene environment for relaxation and recreation for visitors of all ages.
Mainit River and Buquid Heights
Across Binongtoan Bridge lies the historical roots of Alangalang, where the first settlement and civilization began. Mainit River and Buquid Heights mark significant locations in the town's early history. Mainit River was the center of economic activities, while Buquid Heights held the initial human settlement.
By the late 18th century, the population in Buquid had expanded significantly under Fr. Jose Olmo, the parish priest. As the settlement grew, Fr. Olmo decided to relocate the town across Mainit River to its present location, marking a pivotal moment in the town's development and history.
Pasalubong Center
The Alangalang Pasalubong Center is a wonderful destination where both local and foreign tourists can find mementos to bring home from their trip and share a piece of their journey with loved ones. Located beside the Philpost Office, the Pasalubong Center offers a diverse selection of local products and native delicacies.
Beyond serving tourists, the Pasalubong Center plays a crucial role in supporting local farm producers and small business owners. These suppliers contribute their products to the center, thereby bolstering the local economy and showcasing the rich offerings of Alangalang to visitors.
